In 1953 Netherlands was hit by flood, over 1800 lives were lost and 100 000 of thousands lost everything. The prime minister is afraid of rising sea levels, since he lives 7m below sea level. The Netherlands has had a struggle with water. That is why the Dutch are interested in climate change and taking measures.
After the disaster they promised themselves it would never happen again, this urgency has made the Dutch people work together to seize opportunities to help to prevent rising sea levels and other climate change implication.
Netherlands hopes to conclude climate change agreement in Copenhagen this year, they cannot wait till disaster is upon them
Nations have to reach out even though it is an controversial issue, they must have courage to leave their positions to make the earth cleaner safer and more sustainable, solidarity and global action.
The Netherlands will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 as will the EU after the Copenhagen summit.
Although Holland and the United Nations have made pledges another nations have held back, the president says more contribution and ambition is needed. Simply, it is urgent that developing nations make a difference and contribute, not only developed nations, this less developed nations must take action and Holland will assist them including public and private financing,
He is aware it will cost over 100 billion; the EU is responsible due to capacity and emissions to pay a fair share of the financing. Early action funding is needed as early as possible; the Netherlands is ready to contribute. They are ambitious to prevent climate change and they can afford it. Above all it is smart investment to our future- let’s remember that for Copenhagen.
