Precis:
In the article Copenhagen Climate Conference to Create ‘Huge’ Carbon Footprint on Thursday 9th it discusses the different aspects of how the climate change itself causes a lot of emissions and does not help the world get a better place. FOX news, which is a very left-winged news station, does not take the global warming issue serious, and does not think the conference in Copenhagen is a good idea. For that reason, the whole article discusses the negative sides of the conference and lists facts and statistics to prove their point. This is also known as the smoking mirror because FOX news is deliberately making fun of the conference and using irony to prove this. For example, during the 12 day conference 40,584 tons of carbon dioxide are used, which is the same amount that Morocco uses in the year 2006. FOX uses this statistic, because it wants to show that the Copenhagen conference does not help the world, but it brings more emissions in the atmosphere. However, this idea is foolish, because on cannot overcome this meeting, unless one does not care about global warming. Furthermore, the use of a metaphor in the opening sentence “a lot of hot air” can either explain the tension during this conference or the emissions which are released. Another example that is used throughout the article, is naming. The name Patrick Michaels is used over and over again, however he is a liberal and also thinks that the conference is nonsense. He points out that transport and hotels would have to change their whole plan, to make this conference use less CO2, however one knows that for example Barack Obama cannot come in a public plan, use public transportation and sleep in ‘normal’ hotel because he is a well known political figure, which has to be safe. Also, the goals of America and the world are stated at the end of the article, making them seem impossible and unrealistic. FOX news uses naming of liberal people, metaphors, listing and the smoking mirror effect to make the climate change conference in Copenhagen seem impossible and for no good.
